Ever since my dental school friend mentioned his plans to start treating sleep apnea patients, I became intrigued by this often misunderstood, most undiagnosed and untreated serious medical condition. Realizing that I lacked the knowledge to engage in meaningful conversations about it, I decided to take a Continuing Education course on sleep apnea.

During the course, the speaker recommended a few books that would forever change my perspective on the importance of treating sleep apnea. I devoured the books within a couple of weeks of taking the course. I couldn’t get enough. “Breath” by James Nestor, “Jaws” by Sandra Kahn and Paul R. Ehrlich, and “Gasp” by Dr. Michael Gelb and Dr. Howard Hindin opened my eyes to the profound impact that this condition can have on a person’s overall health and wellbeing.

As I delved deeper into the subject matter, I discovered that obstructive sleep apnea is not just a mere inconvenience or a snoring issue. It is a serious medical condition that can lead to a range of health complications, including cardiovascular disease, Type 2 Diabetes, cognitive impairment and even an increased risk of accidents due to daytime sleepiness.

This newfound knowledge ignited a passion within me to make a difference in the lives of those suffering from obstructive sleep apnea. I realized that as a dentist, I have a unique opportunity to contribute to their wellbeing and connecting the dots by screening at risk patients and providing them with effective treatment options.

My personal “why” for treating obstructive sleep apnea is rooted in the realization that my father had almost every single red flag associated with this condition. The thought that treating his sleep apnea could have prevented the triple bypass surgery he endured a number of years back was reason enough to dive deep into learning. By reading those books, and immersing myself in the subject, joining sleep academies, and completing mini-residencies in sleep, I have taken significant steps towards becoming an expert in the dental sleep medicine field. My dedication to expanding my knowledge and skills is a labor of love to help others who are struggling with similar health issues.

Treating obstructive sleep apnea is not just about improving sleep quality; it’s about transforming lives. By helping patients breathe easier during sleep, we can alleviate their symptoms, enhance their overall health, and restore their quality of life. Witnessing the positive impact that this treatment can have on individuals and their families is incredibly rewarding.

I find it truly remarkable that my 20+ year dental career has prepared me for this path in life. My expertise in oral health and understanding the intricate connections between dental health and overall wellbeing uniquely positions me to help people sleep better and live better.
